There are those who opt for more advanced techniques such as using medications or undergoing some medical procedures. And there are also those who opt for more natural means of managing stress such as massage therapy.

Effectiveness of massage therapy in managing stress

Massage therapy has become a significant part of general health care for many people living in today’s stressful world. Many professionals and even traditional healthcare systems—all throughout the world—recognize that traditional means of managing stress such as in massage therapy—could be effective in treating chronic ailments caused by stress and could can and contribute to a higher sense of general well-being.

To many, stress management through massage therapy is considered as the modern antidote for stress because it helps combat stress by trying to reduce the tension build up in the muscles. Aside from boosting the body’s immune system, massage therapy also prevents the decrease in circulation and nutrient delivery to tissues which many people who are stressed often are prone with.

Popular as an ultimate “stress reducers,” many healthcare professionals make recommendation to their patients— people, especially those who live by the rule of stress—to undergo massage therapy in their health care treatment plans and stress management strategies.

Benefiting from massage therapy

Statistics show that the most common cause of today’s health problems is stress. Aside from improper diet and unhealthy life style, prolonged periods of stress subconsciously affect many systems of the human body.

Aside from being an effective means of managing stress, massage therapy poses a lot of benefits to people. Primarily, it can develop, maintain, rehabilitate, or augment physical function. Among the extensive benefits of massage therapy, most people consider the therapeutic affect of the treatment on their bodies. Since massage therapy causes diverse physiological effects due to the therapist’s hands moving over the body, its therapeutic effect is proven to improve health by acting directly on the muscular, nervous, circulatory and immune systems.

It also helps relieve or prevent physical dysfunction and pain. And since it targets body parts, which are prone to stress, massage therapy also relaxes tight and tense muscles while improve circulation, recovery time, and immune system function, which reduce overall stress.

Concentrating in creating different movements that can physically stretch muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia, massage therapy also encourages the circulation through the tissue, inhibit muscular spasms, and be either sedating or stimulating to the nervous system. And with the continuing research on the beneficial effects of massage therapy, its effectiveness was also discovered in controlling chronic or acute pain.

With the array benefits massage therapy offers to people specially in stress reduction and in creating a sense of relaxation and well-being, it is no wonder that a wide patronage of it will increase energy and will improve people’s outlook on life.

When using massage therapy as a stress management option, it is very important to understand that elementary knowledge of it is not enough for ordinary individuals to practice it and benefit from it.

Being a regulated health profession, massage therapy requires professionals who have completed hours of education at accredited schools and have extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, assessment, bodywork techniques, and pathology to know when massage therapy is or is not suitable.

Optimism is one of the most effective means of stress management. Optimism allows a person to see the positive side of things. It is an attitude characterized by the belief that everything can be worked out with a positive end result. In the case of stress, an optimistic mind can be able to cope up well with whatever stress situations one experiences in life.

People can have either one of two attitudes in life. One can either be an optimist or a pessimist. Optimists explain positive events as having happened because of them. Pessimists think of it in the opposite way. They have in mind that the negative things that happen in life are their own doing. Optimists see the positive events in their lives as evidence that more positive things will be happening in the future. For pessimists, a negative event will surely lead on to more negative events in the future.

For optimists, negative things that happen are not to be entirely blamed on them where as pessimists usually take the blame on themselves. Optimists think that the negative things happening in their lives are just temporary setbacks while pessimists see the positive things as just temporary occasions that come once in a blue moon. On a more common analogy, optimists see a partially filled glass of water as half full while pessimists usually see it as half empty. The difference between optimists and pessimists can be identified by how they see the positive and the negative things.

In stress management, optimism always wins out. What’s more interesting is that optimism is a trait that can be learned through practice. As a positive thought can do a lot to a stressful mind, conditioning the mind to think only of positive thoughts can sometimes enable it to change perspective subconsciously. It would be a much better deal than to think of the negative all of the tie.

Negative thoughts can bring out the stress easily. And too much stress will always bring the worst in people. The best way to combat the stress and the negative thoughts that come with it is by maintaining a more optimistic attitude. Although for some people it can be a bit difficult to do, optimism actually gets better with practice.

Optimism and a positive attitude offer people a number of certain benefits. Not only will it help one deal better with stress but also with a person’s overall well being. One good reason is that optimists and positive thinkers have been known to live longer than those who see only the negative in life. A good reason for this is that an optimistic mind, always thinking of positive things, deal with less problems and worries.

It is persistent worry and anxiety that seem to bring about such harmful physical conditions like high blood pressure, hypertension, and insomnia. By worrying less, optimists usually have to deal with fewer negative baggages to burden them and are less affected by worry-induced physical conditions. And because of this, optimists live longer and healthier lives.

It is not only that, there is more that positive thinking can bring out in people. Optimism also seems to make people become more persistent. Even in the face of stress and seemingly insurmountable problems, an optimistic mind seems to help people strive longer and survive whereas pessimists easily give up and see the hopelessness in the situation. In stress management, it is the optimists that don’t easily give up.

It fuels persistence that allows them to succeed in overcoming the stress instead of succumbing to it. And simply through this, optimists can show that they are able to do and achieve more than what pessimists can.

Most people don’t know it but the best stress management that they can use is exercise. Aside from not having to spend money on buying products or buying cds for musical relaxation, exercising only requires a minimal amount of your time everyday.

In the world people live in, it is very hard not to be stressed. This is because almost all of the things—work, family, society, and relationships—can be stressors for an individual. Because of these conditions, stress has become an inevitable part of people’s daily living.

For some people, stress can be good because it gives them adrenaline rush. A sudden surge of stress can help them do things in their own accord, finish tasks ahead of time and achieve their goals within the given deadline. At times, stress even helps them to perform better and have a competitive but positive outlook in life.

But, not all people can turn stress into a positive energy. In fact, most people who get stressed suffer from a wide range of health and emotional problems as times go by. People—especially those who getting so much stress on the workplace—suffer from minor health problems such as insomnia or sleep disturbances, headaches and upset stomach. These eventually lead to difficulties in concentration in things, mood swings and irritability, low self-esteem and moral, and poor socialization with immediate family and friends.

This type of stress, if not managed properly, can lead to chronic health problems and conditions such as various cardiovascular diseases, several musculoskeletal conditions, and different levels of psychological disorders. So to avoid these, problems people should be thinking of ways to manage stress and live a healthy life.

Stress management through regular exercise

For some people, there is no better way to manage stress than getting regular exercise. This is because exercise can reduce physical stress fast and can help people to feel good about themselves. Aside from reducing stress by relaxing tense muscles during stressful situations, exercise can offer a lot more benefits than people could ever imagine. More than being a good stress buster, exercise can help you to:

1. Improve the blood flow. Blood flow to the brain is very important for a person to think clearly. When you are doing exercise, additional sugars and oxygen are being brought to your brain, causing you to think effectively.

2. Release endorphins. The chemical called endorphins are responsible for giving a person a feeling of happiness and positive outlook in life. Despite all the stress brought by your surroundings, you can manage it as long as you have enough release of endorphins.

3. Have a fit body. Looking good and feeling good about one’s physical self help many people manage stress. This is because if a person feels he or she is beautiful, that person can take on anything thinking that no matter what happens.

4. Strengthens one of the most important of the body, the heart. If a person gets stressed, the major organ that is affected is the heart. So, to save the heart from any diseases and conditions brought by stress, exercise is a must to ensure that you will maintain a heart that has greater elasticity to pump out enough blood and oxygen to the body.

Indeed, exercise is a very effective technique in stress management. But before engaging into it, make sure that you are physically fit to endure strenuous physical activities. You can ensure that you are in good shape if you visit your doctor and have a general check up.

The doctor can tell you what will be your limitations and can even recommend an exercise program suitable for your needs.
