Laugh your way to Glory

When I was young, my mother would admonish me if I had a hefty laugh. She felt it was arrogance and disrespect. Today I realise that life is a full circle when I and my wife watch our grandson filling our hearts with joy and laughter. He brings happiness to our being. I remember our sense of humour and laughter when we were children. There were no fears any where and oneness every where. Laughing is a manifestation of our child within. I wish we could arouse the child and reincarnate heartfelt laughter in our present day materialistic lives.

As we work hard in our careers and try to stay one step ahead, we most of the time neglect ourselves. Laughing helps release our negative energies and makes our heart to that of a child. Laughter brings us instantly into the present moment. It is the only moment where we can experience happiness and joy. It elevates our mood and brings in positive energy. Our thinking and priorities change with our age and life starts taking an about turn. Therefore be happy and healthy and focus for a balanced living for laughter in our lives. People who laugh loud and are humorous have a positive out look and stable emotions.

If our thoughts are pure and sincere, our laughter becomes natural and from within. A hefty laugh is like a new dawn in our lives and is an antidote for a bad attitude. I some times feel that as kids, laughter to us was natural and manifestation of our daily fun and play. The pleasant memories of yesteryears become a guiding factor to help us to steer our way in times of emotional stress. Today laughing and humor are channels of expressing love and social net working. It is a chord of unification between different religions, race and brings people together. It is estimated that a child laughs approximately four hundred times a day while an adult fifteen times a day. Nature has bestowed us with laughing and humor to give new perspectives of living.

It is sad to find hatred, conflicts, greed, and jealousy common in our lives today. Most of us are busy in out performing each other resulting in laugh less mundane life. We waste too much time on what others think of us. Trying to please others destroys the very basis of our happiness. Our laughs are generally staged managed and curtain wailed to depict our pseudo happiness. In the modern parleys it is known as diplomacy. Some times we laugh at our life’s ironies only to depict our negativity. Our happiness is all within, but our coloured mind and thoughts search for it out side.

Laughing installs optimism and directs our mind to happiness and feeling satisfied. It shifts focus from our problems and acts as a catalyst in cheering our mind. Laughing helps in releasing fear, anger, and prevents conflicts and eases tension. It also helps in clearing misunderstanding if any and builds a base to see others point of view. Victor Hugo says, “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.”

Laughter yoga today is gaining popularity. One can hear loud sounds of Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha   during the early mornings in the neighborhood parks. People in small groups participate in laughing exercises to release stress and maintain a healthy mind and body. Laughter yoga also benefits those on heavy anti-depressant pills and tranquillizers. Dr. Burdick of Western New York was pioneer in practicing ‘Laughter is the best medicine.’ His good humor was contagious and used drugs sparingly. Dr. Madan Kataria of Mumbai is spear heading a movement on laughter yoga for health, joy and world peace. The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has recently added laughter yoga as a complementary therapy. Laughter stimulates our brain, nervous system, and muscular system. A good laugh also helps in reducing blood pressure. Cummings once said “the most wasted of all days is one without laughter.”

Taking a clue from this, the TV channels are organizing laughter and comedy shows. The child within reminds us to laugh our way to glory. Therefore Jog in with laughter early morning in a group by raising hands, shaking body and making funny gestures and giggling.
